Expertise with Adults (see below for children): Dr. Sampson has extensive experience working with adults who wrestle with a range of environmental and psychological issues such as: relationship issues, identity and career development, body image and eating concerns, mood disturbance, depression, anxiety, bi-polar, family of origin issues, personality concerns, women’s issues, grief, trauma, and substance abuse. Dr. Sampson utilizes an integrationist approach to counseling, drawing from a variety of approaches such as psychodynamic, existential and cognitive-behavioral techniques. At the basis of her approach is an appreciation for the unique perspectives, experiences and needs of each person (or family), and therefore a recognition of the importance of adapting her counseling approach to each individual. In an effort to tailor her treatment to each person or family’s particular needs, Dr. Sampson spends considerable time getting to know her clients and understanding their specific difficulties and strengths. She strives to create a therapeutic atmosphere in which her clients can feel safe, comfortable and connected, as these conditions are essential to the process of self-exploration, symptom relief, and psychological growth.

Specific to Dr. Sampson’s experience with adults in university counseling, she has considerable experience working with issues that are typical during young adulthood, such as identity and individuation, career development, relationships, emerging sexuality, and concerns such as organization and time/stress management. Dr. Sampson also completed a specialized residency program that focused on the treatment of eating disorders (including body image issues) during which she provided individual outpatient counseling and co-facilitated an eating disorders group for young women dealing with disordered eating patterns. Additionally, she co-facilitated an interpersonal process group which assisted students struggling with social anxiety, communication and relationships to develop the skills necessary for successful social interaction.

In addition to extensive experience providing therapy for adults, Dr. Sampson also has also conducted psychological testing with adults to address issues related to substance abuse, personality issues, mood and anxiety disorders, intelligence, and parenting concerns.

Expertise with Children: Dr. Sampson has a broad range of experience providing outpatient, intensive outpatient, and intensive in-home psychotherapy to children, adolescents and families. She has worked with children and adolescents struggling with psychological difficulties such as: depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attachment problems, trauma and abuse, self-esteem, oppositional and defiant behaviors, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, social skills problems, and pervasive developmental delays (such as Autism).

Dr. Sampson has specialized training in the area of Structural Family Therapy which focuses on helping families to recognize problematic interactional patterns and establish healthier boundaries and methods of communication. She has assisted families with a range of issues such as typical life changes, separation and divorce, familial conflict, grief, and parenting issues. With regard to parenting issues, Dr. Sampson believes there is often no “one size fits all,” but rather effective parenting is the result of matching parenting styles to the needs, temperament and developmental level of a particular child. Dr. Sampson utilizes active interventions, such as modeling, coaching, and home assignments to empower parents to try new techniques that address their child’s particular needs and improve the parent-child dynamic. She has experience working with diverse family configurations including two-parent and single-parent homes (adoptive or biological), multigenerational and extended families, as well as foster families.

Dr. Sampson also has experience conducting both psychoeducational and psychodiagnostic testing with children and adolescents for screening and diagnosis of the following: attention-deficit/hyperactivity difficulties, learning problems, pervasive developmental disorders, mood disorders, trauma reactions, and anxiety issues. Dr. Sampson can also include assessment of the family as a way to more fully understand the child or adolescent in context and to more effectively assist the family in identifying areas of strength and areas for improvement.

PERSONAL: Dr. Sampson in a member of the American Psychological Association, Division 32 (Humanistic Psychology). She is also assisting to develop a curriculum for ZINA – an organization developed to link psychologists in the United States with professors and counselors in West Kenya in order to create a self-sustainable counselor training program. The organization is geared toward empowering women and girls to come to voice as they prepare to take advantage of the new rights afforded to them by the upcoming constitutional dispensation. Aside from her professional interests, Dr. Sampson strives to achieve balance in her life by spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, exercising, and finding time for self-reflection. Dr. Sampson also greatly enjoys the arts, especially music, dance and film.
