Dr. Rebekah Comp provides individual, group, family, and couple’s therapy, and career and psychological assessment services for individuals struggling with a variety of issues. Her work has included therapy and evaluation with adults, adolescents, and children. Dr. Comp holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, a master’s degree in Clinical Practices, and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a specialization in Mental Health. She completed her doctoral studies at the University of Hartford's Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology in Connecticut, and her internship at Duke University. She has experience working in a variety of settings including inpatient hospitals, community mental health centers, university counseling centers, and outpatient clinics. Dr. Comp has experience working with clients of all ages struggling with everything from temporary life transitions and general life stress to severe and persistent mental illness.
Dr. Comp was trained and practices in an integrative therapeutic style, tailoring sessions to each individual client’s unique needs. She tends to implement experiential, brief dynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and solution-focused techniques, with a focus on the therapeutic relationship. A combination of these techniques helps guide the client to immediate symptom relief, as well as provides the opportunity for exploration of deeper meaning through taking a look at early life experiences, patterns and behaviors. Dr. Comp’s work focuses on the mind-body connection, and thus a portion of her initial session with a client will focus on “the basics” such as sleep and eating habits, exercise, and general self-care. She also enjoys weaving her love of visual arts into her therapy work when appropriate, and as such can provide art therapy using various modalities to include drawing, painting, and computer graphics. Her primary clinical interests include eating and body image concerns (EBIC), stress management and anxiety, depression, transition to college, grief and loss, sexuality and gender diversity, and couple’s issues. Therapy and psychoeducational groups conducted by Dr. Comp have included women’s interpersonal process groups, anxiety and stress reduction, tools for depression, DBT groups, medication management, and co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse.
In addition to her therapy skills, Dr. Comp has specialized experience in evaluation, including psychological, neuropsychological, educational, EBIC, alcohol and substance abuse, and career assessment. She conducts comprehensive evaluations for AD/HD, learning disorders, personality factors, psychological and emotional functioning, alcohol and substance abuse, eating disorders, and career exploration. She also has specialized training in the area of danger and risk assessment, particularly with college students. She also does outreach on EBIC-related topics, and provides trainings in the area of sexuality and gender diversity to mental health professionals as a consultant.
Dr. Comp has been active in the area of sexuality and gender diversity for the last ten years. She has been involved in the annual conference for True Colors, a non-profit organization that works with other social service agencies, schools, organizations, and within communities to ensure that the needs of sexual and gender minority youth are both recognized and competently met. During her doctoral work, she was on the American Psychological Association’s Graduate Students’ Committee on LGBT Concerns, and she was also a co-chair on the Connecticut Psychological Association’s Task Force on Sexuality and Gender Diversity. Dr. Comp is the first psychologist to create a training program for mental health professionals in the area of sexuality and gender diversity, which is currently being published by Professional Resource Press. In addition to this unique specialty area, Dr. Comp is an active member of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Personality Assessment.
Personal: I constantly seek balance in my life through getting enough sleep, healthy eating, engaging in activity, spending time with family and friends, and taking time to myself. I believe that sunshine, animals and laughter are three of the most therapeutic things in life. In my spare time I enjoy travel, reading, photography, cooking, and playing with my dog.
