Dr. Freeman enjoys working with teenagers, especially in a naturalistic setting when possible, and thus if the teen is interested therapy may be conducted along the beautiful walking trails around the office. She finds that providing opportunities for creativity in her work with teens is very helpful. For example, in addition to taking her teen clients outside for a walk, she might also play games they like or listen to their favorite song with them in order to build rapport and meet them where they are in their readiness for therapy. Her warm, accepting, non-judgmental manner enables her to build connections with her teens fairly quickly and is one of the reasons they enjoy working with her.
Dr. Freeman has experience working with teens in wilderness therapy where she spent three weeks at a time camping with adolescents and providing individual and group therapy; this unique type of experience has enhanced her outpatient therapy skill by creating in her a strong ability to connect with teenagers in a way that is comfortable and feels genuine to the teen. Dr. Freeman also knows it is important to include parents, and at times other essential family members, in the treatment of the teen, and often works with all parties to improve communication and understanding of one another. Respecting the uniqueness of each teenager and family, she works with the parents and teen to determine what is needed in the teenager’s treatment and who should be involved.
Additionally, Dr. Freeman has extensive experience conducting comprehensive psycho-educational, psychological, and substance abuse evaluations to help teens and their families identify and explore the teens’ difficulties and create a plan for moving forward. Specifically, she has experience conducting comprehensive evaluations assessing emotional/personality functioning as well as cognition, intelligence, and memory which includes testing for AD/HD (‘ADD’) as well as for learning disorders. She is skilled at diagnostic interviewing with both teenagers and their families, writing integrated assessments reports for all age groups, and conducting feedback sessions with clients to present the results of the testing. She has completed numerous emotional/personality test batteries for the purpose of diagnosis as well as treatment planning. She has experience assessing intelligence, memory, achievement, developmental issues, learning issues, and attentional problems. As is often necessary with teens, she may include the parents, siblings, current and past teachers, and sometimes even friends in the information gathering process. After the evaluation is completed, she will meet with the parents and their teenager to discuss the results and to share recommendations for treatment which may include helpful changes the teen could implement, suggestions for teachers, recommendations for therapy, parenting strategies, and book suggestions.
Dr. Freeman’s clients often report that they enjoy her non-judgmental nature, warmth, and genuineness as it creates a comfortable atmosphere for therapy or for evaluations.
