Dr. Mina Ratkalkar is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and a postdoctoral psychology fellow at Lepage Associates. With over a decade of clinical experience, Dr. Ratkalkar has developed multiple clinical specialties to serve adults and couples, and enjoys working with teens and children as well. Dr. Ratkalkar also has expertise in forensic assessment. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Drexel University and her Master of Social Work from Columbia University. She also holds a master’s in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University, and completed her undergraduate B.S. with a double major in Clinical Psychology and Community Health at Tufts University. Dr. Ratkalkar is also a Certified Sex Therapist and pursued rigorous training at Modern Sex Therapy Institutes in Florida to meet state certification standards.
Intervention Style: Dr. Ratkalkar takes an evidence-based approach to therapy – focusing on interventions known to work! She uses approaches grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with individuals and couples. She is trained in specific interventions to treat: PTSD – Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT); grief – Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT); and couples therapy – Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) and moving past affairs. She draws from her training across disciplines to find the best approach for each client or couple. She aims to give people skills and tools they can use right away to start meeting their goals, with options for shorter or longer-term therapy. Dr. Ratkalkar takes time to learn about each client’s background before collaboratively developing a plan of action. She works with people coping with a range of concerns, including all forms of anxiety, depression, bipolar, trauma, relationships, sexuality, healthy lifestyle, and academics or career. Though problems may be serious, Dr. Ratkalkar believes that humor is healing. As a therapist of South Asian heritage, Dr. Ratkalkar recognizes the importance of considering how people’s unique cultures and values influence the therapy process.
Evaluation and Forensic Experience: Dr. Ratkalkar completed her doctoral concentration in Forensic Psychology. She has conducted evaluations for state and federal criminal court including but not limited to competency to stand trial, sex offender sentencing, juvenile waiver, competency waive Miranda, and capital sentencing. She has also performed evaluation for civil court cases including personal injury claims, wrongful incarceration, and claims for professional licensing, and provides psychological evaluations for family court as well. Dr. Ratkalkar administers forensic assessments and conducts in-depth clinical interviews to provide comprehensive and individualized reports. Dr. Ratkalkar was formerly a felony mitigation specialist in Florida and Pennsylvania, producing written reports and biographical films to assist attorneys in advocating for their clients. She is adept at collaborating with legal professionals and families to create cohesive narratives to present in court.
Teaching and Training: Dr. Ratkalkar was previously an Adjunct Professor of Psychology of Sexual Behavior at Drexel University. She has also developed workshops on sexual communication and consent that she is able to tailor for diverse audiences. Dr. Ratkalkar regularly presents workshops and research at conferences and events for psychologists, social workers, and forensic and sexuality professionals.
Research: Dr. Ratkalkar’s doctoral research examined how children’s family and trauma history affected sentencing decisions. She is a collaborator on current efforts to revise established practice guidelines for forensic mental health assessment (FMHA) to be more culturally informed and race-conscious. The proposed guidelines aim to help forensic evaluators better account of how race shapes people’s experiences.
Personal: Dr. Ratkalkar moved to Durham from Philadelphia. She enjoys traveling, playing the piano, and trying new hobbies and food.
